Origin
Is a silicate mineral that appears in many colors, from light green to yellow.
It was first described in 1788 for an occurrence in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. In fact, it is one of the first minerals to be named after a historical person.
Also, prehnit was the first mineral to be named and described from South Africa, long before the country became an important source
for precious gems, including diamond.
The most important source of prehnit is Africa but it can be also found in Australia, Canada, China, and the United States.

Name
The name comes from the name of the Dutch Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who had described and brought this gem from the Cape of Good Hope to Europe.
History
Prehnit is one of the rarer and lesser-known gems and first was adored as a rare collector's gemstone. Recently it is becoming more and more popular as a jewellery stone, as new deposits have been found so it became more affordable.
